Shyanne’s Outfit

If there was one sure-fire way to cure a bad week, Shyanne mused, it was shopping.

The blonde girl was currently walking down the strip of the Salem mall, humming along to the top 40 pop songs playing over the loudspeaker to entertain the passerby. Shyanne had a few bags hanging off her arm. Today her makeup was done fully—her face was covered in foundation, contoured, and she had on some eye makeup that had taken her a half hour to do. Shyanne walked with confidence as she strut around the mall alone, hearing her ringtone go off. She pulled out her cell phone to see the text was form Kathlyn, her friend. Currently annoyed at Kathlyn, Shyanne growled and ignored the message though Kathlyn could see she saw it and instead opened up another chat with someone else, fingers clacking away on the touch screen like nobody’s business.

Shyanne’s heels clicked up the cool floors of the mall as she didn’t bother looking up from her device, expecting everyone in front of her to move out of the way. Unfortunately that was a really stupid idea, because a few feet later Shyanne’s torso collided with someone’s back and Shyanne gasped, catching herself before she fell to the floor in an embarrassing manner, her brows twitching in irritation when she saw a guy standing in her way. She’d have to get him to turn around and see if he was cute or not… if he wasn’t, it was completely pointless to play nice.

”Uhm… I’m sorry.” Shyanne said, with a girlish smile tacked on after, ”I like, didn’t see you.”

When the guy turned around, at least, Shyanne was greeted with a rather attractive looking face. She looked him over briefly, deciding that playing nice would work in her favor at the moment. Even if she didn’t mindlessly hook up with guys—Shyanne was not a slut—she did like to give her eyes a treat every once in a while and flirt.

Chase’s attempt to make conversation was reciprocated by Shayanne, who giggled and smiled up at him.

”Oh, yup! I’m here to shop to cheer myself up after a rather bad week.” Shyanne said, the memory of that lunch period where some loser had basically forced her to accept his invitation to homecoming by doing so in front of the whole school (an exaggeration on her part, Shyanne could have said no easily) still fresh in her mind. Shyanne didn’t let her face fall. ”How about you? Are you looking for something in particular? I’m like, a regular here, so if you don’t know where a store is I’m a pretty good directory!”

”Yeah, well, it happens. It’s whatever now, anyway.” Shyanne said, which was technically true. She wasn’t about to go into a gossip trip whining about how she hated her homecoming date now. Like, what if this guy was a gossip or knew Noah or something? In one second she could make herself even worse off than she was right now. ”Oh that sounds like fun! I like the little café in the food court- -the one that sells the wraps? The chicken ranch one is my favorite!”

”Oh, an ice cream sundae sounds really good actually! Or a froyo! I’d love to hit the food court with you!” Shyanne said a little too overzealously, though her excitement wasn’t necessarily about the fact they were going to get food and a little more about the fact that this cute guy wanted to hang out with her right now. Shyanne was only slightly hungry at the moment but she did suppose it was near lunch time and if she wanted to beat the lunch rush of mall-goers hoarding all the tables in the food court, they should go now.

Besides, if they were eating together it’d be easier to snag a table. Shyanne smiled as she walked side by side with Chase, heading towards the food court, which was just visible ahead.

”Do you want to pick a table and then go grab our food, and then meet at the table?” Shyanne asked.

”Excuse me? Should I be concerned?” Shyanne said, but she laughed it off. Perhaps she should be more concerned about sitting with a person she’d just met, but Shyanne lived such a privileged life that she just imagined nothing like that could ever happen to her! She had too much of a nice life for anything bad to happen. She did, however, wonder if Chase was trying to imply she was some kind of harlot for going to eat with some guy she just met. ”We’re only eating together, besides, it’s in public! We’re just making sure we both get a seat before the lunch rush, right?”

”Brown cotton candy?! I hope it’s chocolate flavor and not something else!” Shyanne laughed, though she did look his face over. Chance seemed rather harmless. Murderer crazy boys did not have cute faces like his! So Shyanne just smiled up at him, wondering if he went to her school. Oh, or maybe he was an older college boy—if that was the case, even better! She had the attention of a college guy right now! Besides, if this guy attended Metric High, she would have seen him. Shyanne knew everyone at Metric High, even the losers, by face and name.

Shyanne could think of one other flavor that brown could be—poop—though that would be really, really gross to say! So she didn’t want to. Besides, she had an image to keep up as a bubbly and adorable girl. No way would she mess it up and make a gross joke. She was not that weird, quirky type of girl that you found as the heroine in YA novels, nor did she want to be her.

”Chocolate? Ooh! I love chocolate! Especially ice cream!” Shyanne said, oblivious to any other meaning the question might have had. ”I’d love to get some ice cream after! Oh! An outfit for homecoming? I can help you out if you want! You go to Metric, right?”

"Well, duh! Of course i'm going! I'm super excited to go--!" Shyanne said, her mind briefly flashing back tot he fact that she had the literal worst date imaginable. Ugh. What a mood kill. But still, she wasn't going to let that stop her from having fun at the dance! Shyanne could dance with whoever she wanted, it didn't have to be limited to Noah. Maybe if Chase went, she could get a dance from him! There was nothing wrong with a friendly dance, after all...

When he asked what school she went to Shyanne momentarily panicked. What if he was like, a college senior? Or worse, what if he thought any high schooler was not worth his time! She'd be in the college in a few more years! She already couldn't wait for that day she entered the college. And then everyone would know just how worth it Shyanne was.

"I'm an upperclassmen in high school." She admitted, not exactly lying but implying maybe she could be a senior, "What about you?"

"A sophomore, huh? That's cool! I am definitely going to the college once I graduate. I want to be a broadway star! And I am totally going to! I'm super good in my classes, and i'll only improve once I join the college and get to take the more serious ones!" Shyanne bragged, flipping her hair back slightly as people began to pile into the food court. The area surrounding them was loud, but not so loud that Shyanne couldn't hear Chase's voice over them.

"Well, i'm not worried, because we're not alone!" Shyanne emphasized again when he said she wasn't dealing with a serial killer. "I'm Shyanne. Nice to meet you!"

”Yup! That’s me! Except I’m not so much threatening as I am actually, like, talented.” Shyanne said, the people beginning to enter the food court. By the time Shyanne noticed, she looked at the line for the food she wanted a paled. Ugh, it was so long! What the heck? She pouted her lower lip. It looked like she’d been distracted by talking.

And Chase had a point—Shyanne was so small that she would literally be crushed by these hungry people—even the people in line for the deli. She sighed and slowly sat down. ”Ugh, you’re right. Well that’s fine I guess, like, I’d so rather wait than look like a cow just trying to plow through everyone.”

”Oh my Gosh!! You so should! I’ll be, literally like, the best Broadway star ever!” Shyanne said brightly, already dreaming of the day she took the stage. If she was being totally honest, her interest in musicals stemmed from the movie versions of High School Musical, one of her favorite series to date. Though she had a real talent in the field of musicals, singing, and Broadway—she just dreamed that someday she could play her queen, Sharpay Evans, in a live action production of the films!

Shyanne giggled when he said they weren’t on a time constraint and her giggles continued when he said she wasn’t a cow. Shyanne folded her legs underneath the table and batted her eyelashes over at Chase from across the table briefly, full flirt mode on. ”You’re right, I’m totally not a cow! Like, I think I’d be crushed if I went over there. You look strong enough to power through, though, if you really wanted to! I’m so envious!”

Shyanne’s smile grew as Chase said she was a catch, the nickname odd but not necessarily unwelcome. When it came to cute guys, they could nickname her whatever they wanted to as long as it wasn’t rude. Now, had he been ugly, Chase would not have gotten away with that at all. But instead Shyanne just giggled.

”Catch? I don’t have one. I’m just, me.” She said, though little did Chase know she did have quite a few very big catches that he’d only really see if he got to know her past her shallow rouse that she was putting on now and actually got to see her angry, or God forbid he ever meet her bigoted and racist parents when they came up from the south to visit their daughter at the family formal in December. But for now he didn’t have to know anything about Shyanne other than the sweet act she was putting on right now. ”Oh, you can call me Shay if you want. It’s kind of cute!”

”Aww, are you volunteering to be my knight? I could definitely use one to tough that crowd!” Shyanne said, resting her elbows on the table and placing her chin in her palm. She spared a glance over at the crowd, watching as people waited in long lines to get their food. She pouted slightly. Even if she didn’t have to plow her way though, Shyanne Volle did not wait in that long a line. She already wanted to go to pinkberry and just get some frozen yogurt! Oh well, she could wait until after she ate her wrap. She just had to be patient.

”Are you hungry enough to brave the crowd yet?” Shyanne asked, not sure which court option Chase would choose. She hoped the one she was going to, so that he could shoo people out of her way and stop weird nerds in middle school from trying to hit on her. It’d happened a few times and she figured it was a consequence of being hot, but like, still. Her type was not pre-teen dweeb who’s voice wasn’t even deep yet.

Shyanne got up when Chase did, eager to get her wrap before the food court ran out. Well, it wasn’t like they’d actually run out, per say, but she really didn’t want to get the gross leftover chicken at the bottom of the box. They always had the best chicken for rush out, when the most people would be consuming it! She was excited at Chase’s bravery, and reached over to grab hold of his arm.

”So that we don’t get swept away in the crowd.” She pointed out, tugging him towards the line. ”I want a wrap, duh!! Oh, but with you, I think we can totally handle the line! I mean, you’re definitely strong enough to.”

She winked up at him as she continued to hold his arm, as they got in the line. Already the crowd was anxious for their food, and Shyanne pouted, inching a little closer to the edge, hoping to ‘accidentally’ cut a few people to get closer to the counter.
