Shyanne bit her lower lip as she realized that this guy wasn’t happy with their answer. She took a step back as she tried even more to hide behind Chase. The angry man didn’t seem interested in her—well, that was also because Shyanne was basically hiding herself—and he was focused on Chase.

Shyanne refused to go back to the end of the line though, and puffed her cheeks.

”Look, we’ll just stay right here, behind you, we’re not going to take any time away from your break! See, the line’s moving up?” Shyanne said, hoping that the guy was happier about the fact that the line was moving up and that would appease him from his anger at her and Chase.

Shyanne watched the man dangerously eye Chase as he made a smart remark, herself staying safe behind Chase as the angry man on break turned aroundwhen the line moved up. The people behind them were whispering but fortunately none of them seemed too surprised the duo was in front of them. Shyanne sighed of relief. Sure, the position they were in right now could have been better, but anything was better than being kicked to the back of the line.

As the man moved up and away from them, Shyanne looked up at Chase, smiling at his comment.

”Like, he so was. He seriously needs to… chill.” Shyanne glared at the back of the man’s head, but the man no longer cared and was instead looking at the menu. Shyanne hoped he choked on his wrap. ”But you handed that so cool! Like, I could never have said something like that to the guy. I was like, totally scared, but like, totally impressed!”

Fortunately for Chase, he said the right thing. Shyanne seemed impressed by his words and let out a girlish giggle, twirling a strand of her blonde hair around her forefinger and thumb with her free hand as the line moved up some.

”That’s so brave!” Shyanne said brightly, hearing Chase talk up the incident. She was flattered by him saying that he’d done it to prevent the guy from messing with her. Shyanne liked guys like that, who didn’t let other creeps bother her. There was something about being protected that Shyanne just loved. ”Like, I so don’t blame you, a fight would’ve been like, so crappy, especially because then we wouldn’t get our food. Besides, I’m just happy that you were thinking of me.”

Shyanne laughed at Chase’s comments about the trip being a waste of time if they had gotten into a fight, and she didn’t care if it was literally just a reiteration of what she’d just said—she nodded and smiled like she was impressed. Shyanne was out with a college student now—she had to inflate his ego as much as she could! Besides, his smile was really cute!

”Aww, that is literally so sweet. Thanks!” Shyanne said, moving up. Grumpy guy had finally gone to a cashier, and it was his turn. Shyanne and Chase were next. One of the kids ordering at the third register down left, and Shyanne tugged Chase down towards the cashier.

”C’mon! It’s our turn, Chase!” she said.

As Shyanne moved up to place her order she smiled over at Chase’s nickname for her and then turned to the cashier, who looked really tired but Shyanne liked to imagine that the poor girl was jealous that Shyanne was so pretty and here with a cute guy. Like, who wanted to work cashier at the food court in the mall on a nice day like this? Like, obviously there were so many better things to do than work!

”I want the ranch chicken rap please! No peppers! With a lemonade, please!” Shyanne said, and the woman place Shyanne’s order. She then read out the total, which was about 12 dollars and 50 cents.

Shyanne glanced at Chase, wondering if he was going to offer to pay for her or if she’d have to reach for her wallet. Honestly either way would work, but she hoped he paid for her. Shyanne liked to be treated to things, after all!

Being pretty and blonde definitely had its advantages. When Chase offered to pay for her food (though explained that next time they’d split the bill), Shyanne felt a swell of pride that she was being treated. Though he said it wasn’t a date and didn’t seem too keen on being the one to buy, Shyanne had got him to treat her and thus was proud! She smiled a pretty smile at Chase as he paid.

”Thank you so much! That’s awfully nice of you! Yeah, next time will totally be half and half! Thanks, again!” Shyanne said, though she wasn’t even sure if there’d be a next time. Sure she liked Chase but sometimes these kinds of encounters simply ended without anything coming out of it. She still didn’t have Chase’s number and besides, she would definitely want to be with someone who would treat her! Shyanne was spoiled, and didn’t like the idea of splitting even. Still she hummed happily as she took her drink and food and followed Chase to their stuff, making herself comfortable on the seat.

Shyanne tilted her head to the side innocently at his question. Was he trying to figure out more about her, did he want her to talk? Shyanne took another bite of her wrap (which was super good) before she wiped her mouth to make sure she didn’t look embarrassingly gross in front of this older guy. She made sure to chew completely and swallow before she spoke up.

”Me? Are you like, asking for my life story or something?” She asked, giggling at the end of her sentence in almost a teasing manner. Still, he was interested and Shyanne loved talking about herself. It was her favorite hobby, besides Broadway itself. ”Well I grew up in Oklahoma with my family! I’ve got a mom, dad, and older brother, but my older brother’s kind of, like, a total drag. But anyway, my mom’s so much better than my dad because like, my dad’s really mean. But anyway, I started watching TV when I was a kid and I saw this movie, High School Musical, and that was totally my inspiration for Broadway. I started singing along to the songs and my mom convinced me to try out for a musical in my school! And like, I totally got in, even though I was like, the youngest title cast member on the roster! Then we heard about this place, Metric, and I auditioned to have high school here! My dad was like tots reluctant to let me go and so was mom I guess. I was like, whatever, have you guys like seen how good the school is?! So they let me come here!”

She took another bite out of her sandwich and once that was down, she turned to Chase. ”Have you ever seen High School Musical?! It’s so good, you definitely should if you haven’t!”

It probably would have been more polite to ask him about his life… but Shyanne wasn’t really very polite.

”Oh really, you got a sibling? I bet they’re not as lame as my brother is.” Shyanne said, rolling her eyes at the memory of her older brother who was quiet, a stick in the mud, and such a pushover. Still, it was because of that personality of his that Shyanne found it so easy to manipulate him. Shyanne just wished he was cooler. Like, what was the point of having an older brother if he was so lame?!

Her jaw dropped when Chase said he didn’t know high school musical and said it was soemd ead guy’s story or whatever and she shook her head.

”What?! No! Oh my God, High School musical is so not some lame remake thing! It’s totally original and totally the best movie ever!” She insisted, though she honestly had no knowledge of whether or not the story was based on anything else. She supposed it had a romeo-and-juliet sort of feel, but like, that didn’t count. Besides Troy and Gabriella were so much better than romeo and Juliet! ”You need to see it sometime! Oh, there’s three movies. You should watch all three! You should ask your sister if she’s watched it!”

Shyanne found that really hard to believe, though at least her brother had the decency to realize that it was she, Shyanne, who was actually worth something in their family unlike him. He’d taken the fall for her whenever she did something bad and Shyanne was forever thankful—no—thankful wasn’t the right word because to her, she felt as though it was her right and his obligation to give her whatever she wanted.

”I think my brother’s, like, the same way. He’s literally so antisocial.” Shyanne scrunched up her nose at that, as though she smelt something gross. To appease her senses, she took another bite of her wrap. ”Whaaaaat? Ugh, she sounds boring. High School musical is the best series ever!! Obviously you need to watch it now, to appreciate how great it is. I mean, people say it’s like, cheesy, but that’s the point!”

Shyanne flipped some of her hair back, eyes on fire now that she was talking about one of her favorite things.

It was so weird how the world worked! Two kids, with like basically the same genes, could be so completely different! Different as Chase and his sibling and then with Shyanne and her brother. When Chase said she was boring Shyanne had to wonder if she’d be like, friends with her brother, who was like the most boring person on the planet.

”Like, what! How can two boring people come from families with like, us?!” She asked. She and Chase (from the general image she gathered from him anyway) were not boring! Maybe they’d just absorbed all of the interesting parts of their siblings’ personalities. Though when Chase said musicals weren’t his ‘thing’, Shyanne’s eyes lit up in offense, her nostrils flaring just slightly. But she took a breath.

Of course he wasn’t the first person she met who disliked musicals (her dad was the first), so she knew that all she had to do was show him how good the musical was, and then he’d surely love it!

”That is so not fair! You’re not even giving it a chance. High School Musical is literally, like the best. You don’t have to be in music to appreciate it!” Shyanne continued, ”You’re just too scared to like it. Probably because you think your friend’s’ll peg you as gay or something but really, High School Musical is so a good thing for any gender to watch!”

Shyanne puffed out her cheeks at Chase’s continued dislike of musicals. And unfortunately for him, he listened some of Shyanne’s other favorite productions as examples of why he didn’t like the musical scene! Shyanne felt completely offended (though she really shouldn’t, and Chase was allowed to have his own opinion about musicals) and wanted to scream. She didn’t, but she did stare at him with a completely offended look on her face.

”Oh my God, you obviously have like, zero sense of culture like at all!” Shyanne said, tossing her hair over her shoulder with a girlish ‘hmpf’, drawing her lips up into a pout as she looked judgingly over at Chase. ”They are so not a waste of hours. I bet you don’t even know how much work goes into a musical, do you? How much prep, line memorization, vocal cues, stage décor—ugh, why am I even trying to explain.”

When he admitted than he didn’t have the brains and culture, Shyanne was only slightly appeased. She hated to hear someone badmouth her favorite hobby—no—her life—but she supposed that the arts were only considered the arts because not everyone could understand them, or appreciate them. She kept her nose in the air as he said he’d rather be doing other things.

Ugh. He was so like, typical boy. She rolled her eyes. Se supposed any prospect of dating him went out the window—she required a boyfriend to attend every performance she put on waiting with a bouquet of flowers and a wide smile. And of course, he had to tell her how phenomenal the production was and how amazing her performance was. Though despite the fact that he had just written himself off of Shyanne’s potential boyfriends list, he still seemed to be trying to appease her… she narrowed her eyes, but decided she’d see how much more use his companionship could be.

”Whatever. Like, it’s not about liking it, it’s about how amazing the production value is and you just don’ get it. Well, I guess that just means you’re totally dumb like basically other guy.” Shyanne laughed as she said this, waving her hand dismissively. But at least in some dumb guy’s cases—like Chad, the guy who Shyanne used to follow around—he pretended to be interested. ”Like, I put one hundred and ten percent into any show or any production I’m involved in. It’s my passion—and like, hearing someone badmouth that makes me super like, angry!”

Shyanne’s tone was deceitfully bright, as she took another sip of her lemonade.

When he started to imitate her, Shyanne’s happy little expression fell so quickly that it looked like he’d just slapped her. It was one hundred percent Shyanne’s fault for being so rude when he was entitled to his own opinion by Shyanne did not care, because in Shyanne’s world it was one hundred percent about her.

She narrowed her eyes over at him, any chance of them becoming any kind of aquantances now gone because they were off to a horrible start. This guy was cute but she was so through with flirting with someone who obviously didn’t care about the only things in life that mattered!

”Well then maybe you should, like, deal with it.” Shyanne hissed, the tone still peppy but her last words were hissed out in a much darker voice. ”Or, you know, maybe not act like such a loser.”

Shyanne glared at Chase as he took another bite of his food, waiting for him to start groveling and apologizing, but unfortunately for her he had other plans and decided she wasn’t worth it. Which was like, totally ridiculous! Shyanne was worth twenty of this jerk! Her cheeks puffed out in anger as the guy basically told her that he was hot and he was no longer interested in her!

Immediately, the annoyance she was feeling skyrocketed! Who—who—who did he think he was?! She was the one who walked away, not him! Her face was starting to redden with anger, and she sniffled a few times, tars forming in her eyes. Okay, she wasn’t actually that emotionally traumatized by Chase leaving. In fact, she didn’t care if he left! He was kind of cute, but what did he think, calling himself hot?! She was only using him to pay for her meal and for a pass at dating an older guy! He was not hot!

…once again, another lie. She’d been hanging off him all day. But whatever! He wasn't hot anymore! Shyanne stood up and grabbed her shopping bags and drink and stormed over to where she saw Chase walking towards the department stores. She held her head up high, and strut past him, making sure to walk so close that he could catch a whiff of her perfume as she passed without even looking at him. Once she was sure he was behind her and could see, she threw the rest of her wrap and drink (neither of which was empty) into a trash can. She then continued to walk in her heels and with her bags on her arm, letting out a ”hmpf” as she moved towards Sephora. She walked with a pep in her step, deciding that after this self-labeled traumatic incident she deserved to buy herself that cute pallet she’d been eyeing for the past week. Her daddy always told her not to buy because it was too pricey, but when he heard about what happened, he'd totally let her off the hook!
