BACKGROUND/FAMILY
Family ||
Mother – Patricia Fields – Retired – Patricia is the only family that Russell has. His mother raised him alone though he was quite a rambunctious child. When Russell discovered that his mother was unhealthy he did everything in his power to fix that. Now, Russell is Patricia’s emergency contact and is the one who ensures that she lives and eats healthy. Russell is terrified of the day that he loses Patricia because she’s the only person who’s been there for him and he feels like when she’s gone he’ll really be alone. His mother has an extremely sharp wit and great personality, and wants nothing more than for her son to live a long and happy life.
Backstory ||
Russell’s mother is his only family. His mother left her when he was barely older than two, and so he has no recollection of him whatsoever and if he does, it’s certainly not a positive recollection. Russell was raised in a loving but strict environment. His mother, never the healthiest due to her poorer choices in her youth, was extremely strict about enforcing Russell to get his life going in the right direction. She did not hesitate to scare him with completely true stories about her background and mistakes, and thus Russell did not have to make them himself to fear ruining his life over them.
Russell joined the middle school football team when he entered the school and was a great player. He struggled extremely well in his academics, but his teachers always let him slide by because they knew him as a sweethearted boy who just wasn’t good at academics.
In High School, Russell joined the big boys in the football world. But that was also when his mother started to get worse and worse. She never ate right and could never afford to eat right, either. Russell took it upon himself to study the ways she could get healthier. He got advice from his coach and team as well. He eventually made a dietary schedule for her and, even though his mother complained about how it wouldn’t work, she followed through with it. She didn’t immediately recover, but a lot of her pains got easier to manage and she started to gain back weight she’d lost and her spark was back.
Looking into it more, he discovered that she had been a victim of malnutrition not because of a lack of any substance but due to a lack of necessary substances. This fascinated him and Russell started to actually pour a lot of focus into helping his teammates improve their eating habits and in biology class. His English and Math grades never improved, but his science ones did.
After he graduated high school, he was offered a football scholarship at a college in Virginia. He was hesitant to leave his mother for so long, but she encouraged him to become as nutritionist. Russell accepted and moved out, into the dorms, and took classes.
He can honestly say College was a whirlwind of experiences and he doesn’t regret the going there itself. In fact, the times when his calculus grade was his biggest fear are times he’d gladly take back.
When he got back from college, with a degree in physical education and nutrition, his mother told him that she had been put in the hospital. As far as what was wrong, they didn’t seem to know. But she was too old and frail to live by herself and now resides in a nursing home/hospital unit permanently.
That caused the first major argument between the two—he wished she’d told him earlier, she didn’t want him to worry about her and focus on his studies. But despite the fact he was mad Russell never stopped visiting her and buying her flowers. Even when he got a job at Metric he still makes it a point to visit his mother daily, giving her flowers only on Sunday. He’s a regular there and all the doctors and nurses know him. He’s the one who strictly regulates her diet, and constantly wants to be in the know about anything going on with her. Medical terminology is actually great with him; it’s the science, English, and math portions of being a doctor that he doesn’t understand.
To earn some more money during the summer, Russell took up another job as a professional nutrition instructor. Had he tried, he could have become a doctor, but he honestly would rather be a teacher.
OOC NOTES
- Russell really likes the scent of chocolate. In fact, chocolate is one of his favorite things and he’s addicted to eating it. Chocolate’s really the only junk food that Russell allows himself to splurge on, because he figures just having it once in a while isn’t too bad (though he eats it way more than ‘once in a while’)
