Pirate AU Minibios
Plot/Setting: Set somewhere in times before modern technology, (think 1800s ish era level advancements) but not exactly in any set year or time since it’s an AU and it’s a bit of a made-up world. The ship Jean is Captain of has just docked in Salem, a coastal city known for its trade and well-traveled guests. Salem also has a naval base in the center of the city, so Jean and his crew are not planning to stay in the city for very long. However Salem is a huge trading port, so there are many goods to be bartered and traded here. And there is also a large collection of wealthy folks to pickpocket... or other such things.
Political Information:
Year: Roughly 1690, though once again, the AU doesn't 100 percent match up to real life.
Allegiance: Salem is under the British Empire, which is ruled by King James II.
Leaders: Governor is Daniel Rivers. Head of trade is Geoffrey Richardson. Captain of the Navy in Salem is Susan Summers.
Political Conflicts: With France. After a failed ambassador attempt years ago, Daniel rejected any traders from the nation.
Think of something like this for the kind of architecture to expect. The castle in the picture would be where the Naval base is.
Pirates
Jean Audet – Alias: Captain Jean
Name: Jean Audet, known to his crew as simply ‘Captain Jean’.
Age: 57
Title/Rank: Captain of his Pirate Ship
Known Family/Relatives: Unknown.
Ambitions/Goals: To rule his ship and acquire as much wealth as he possibly can; he also seems to have a vendetta against the Navy for interfering with his travels quite often.
Backstory/History: Jean didn’t always live life as a pirate. When he was younger he had a wife and a son, and a home and a job as a navigator for the Navy. However after a fire destroyed his home and killed his wife and son, Jean found no breaks in his job and little sympathy. With much research into places he shouldn’t have looked, Jean discovered the fire was set by his commanding officer in order to frame a specific pirate. Furious, Jean actually left the Navy and joined the pirate in question and quickly became his first mate. After captain Powell died, Jean became the new Captain. He has been Captain for many years and loves his crew, and values loyalty and skill above all else. He is selective about new members of his crew, but likes to learn more about ‘newbies’ nevertheless. When Jean was Powell's first mate, they came to Salem once before. In Salem Jean had a whirlwind romance with a woman and when they left, he gave her a piece of jewelry with his initials engraved on it, but never said goodbye. He doesn't know she was pregnant when he left -- nor does he know that Mallory Abbot is his illegitimate daughter.
Amelia O’Neal – Alias: Amy
Name: Amelia O’Neal; no one knows her surname except herself on the ship, however.
Age: 19
Title/rank: Crew member on Captain Jean’s ship.
Known Family/Relatives: Amy doesn’t talk about him, but her father is a merchant who resides on an island miles away. She ran away from home after falling for a pirate. He has since died in battle, but Amy found she loved the sea and traveling. She opted to stay on the ship.
Ambitions/Goals: Though she is loyal to Captain Jean and the crew, she wants to one day take over the ship and run it herself as the new captain. She would never assassinate or kill Jean, but does do her best to remain in his good graces and maintain good leadership over her fellow pirates.
Backstory/History: Amy was raised by her single father, her mother was a whore Mr. O’Neal fell for but she ran after the baby was born. Since she was a girl her father always told her that her mother died during childbirth. When Amy was 17, she found out that was a lie from her father’s former friend and was furious at having been lied to. She decided to run away to look for her runaway mother, and sought the help of a handsome young man to do so. He took her aboard his captain’s ship and they set sail. Amy had a fling with the handsome pirate who courted her but a few months later he died in battle with the navy. Since then, Amy lost interest in finding her mother – who is likely dead anyway – and instead works with her fellow crewmen and Captain to tear down and destroy the Navy, at all costs.
Heathcliff Arkwright – Alias: Cliff
Name: Heathcliff Arkwright.
Age: 15
Rank/title: A teenage runaway/stowaway on Captain Jean’s ship.
Known Family/Relatives: His mother, Natalie Hall. His step-father, Johnathan Hall. His half-sister, Annabelle Hall. His uncle, Eldin Arkwright, Fleet Admiral of the Navy. He keeps his family on the hush hush and doesn’t want anyone to know who he really is.
Ambitions/Goals: Take a boat back to his old home and live there.
Backstory/History: Cliff lost his father at a young age. When his mother moved across the sea and remarried, he was furious. He decided to run away shortly after his half-sister was born, and when Jean’s ship docked in the harbor, he knew he could stow away on it and once they left port, he’d be set. He armed himself with some bread and a knife, and typically hides in the kitchen on the ship behind some of the barrels.
Navy Officers / Merchants
Susan Summers – Alias: Captain Summers
Name: Susan Summers. Often she’ll go by Captain Summers, and she worked hard to earn the rank she did in the Navy. She cut her hair so that it doesn’t get in the way and keeps it very short and close to her head.
Age: 32
Rank/title: Captain in the Navy
Known Family/Relatives: Her 'niece', Adelaide Summers (actually her daughter). Her younger brother, Arthur Summers.
Ambitions/Goals: To protect her family and ensure they want for little. Mainly, she wants to ensure Adelaide’s safety from the pirates who killed her father.
Backstory/History: Susan lived with her parents until they died in a house fire. When that happened, she was left with only her baby brother for family. She raised him herself and had him educated from a young age. Due to her father having been an admiral in the Navy, the Navy offered their support to Susan but rather than just accepting that, she was determined to get training. The Navy was skeptical about training her but she didn’t relent and eventually they gave in. As she grew older, she met Kasper Duca, a Navy Commander who she fell in love with. During one battle with thieving pirates, Kasper lost his life. Susan was devastated, but more devastated when she learned she was pregnant with his child. She hid her pregnancy for months until she began to show too obviously, then she took some time away from Salem to give birth. When Adelaide was born, Susan feared her training would suffer as a consequence. However her brother, much to her shock, dropped out of school and raised Adelaide as his own. While it hurt Susan to not be known by Adelaide as 'mother' and instead as her aunt, this was for the best. Not only would a baby impede on her training regimine and reputation, but it would also put Adelaide in grave danger to be known as Captain Summer's daughter. Susan ranked up with her intelligence and skill and became a commanding officer, then a captain. She and her family live comfortably and in the wealthier part of the city, under much protection. While Susan can’t always be with her family she goes to see them every day. Kasper had teased her when she was training that her long hair would get in the way and after she gave birth to Adelaide, she cut it short like a man's.
Arthur Summers – Alias: Arthur Summers
Name: Arthur Summers
Age: 18
Rank/title: Ensign in the Navy
Known Family/Relatives: His sister, Susan Summers. His 'daughter', Adelaide Summers (actually his niece).
Ambitions/Goals: Arthur wants to open his own business in Trader’s bay when Adelaide is old enough and he can gather goods to sell. He also wants his family to be safe and for his sister to become the Fleet Admiral of the Navy someday.
Backstory/History: Arthur was raised by his sister since he was a baby and remembers little of his actual parents. He’d always admired her and looked to her as more of a mother than a sister. When he was a child, Susan would ensure that he received the best education with the Navy’s library as he could. He learned all about the world and the seas, and it became one of his dreams to travel to other ports. He never much liked his sister’s fiancé, Kasper Duca, but when he died he was just as unhappy about it as Susan was. When Susan discovered she was pregnant, they hid her condition for a while until they got away from Salem for her to give birth. Rather than let his sister deal with the rumors and dangers of having a child out of wedlock, Arthur claimed Adelaide as his own and raised her as such. She knows him as her father, and the two of them now live in a small house inside the city close to the naval base. Susan technically lives with them too, though often, she winds up having to stay overnight at the naval base. His condition to his sister for raising Adelaide was that she allowed him unlimited access to the Navy’s library, which he has. Now he lives in the center of the city, and is considered an ensign in the Navy. When Adelaide gets older he plans to finish his education and open his own business in the trader’s bay. Adelaide is now about 4 years old, and he claims to people who inquire that her mother died during childbirth. Since he became close to Maxine and is often seen with her, many people whisper that Maxine is the mother of his child -- or at least his girlfriend -- which he never denies but never confirms, either, not wanting to fuel rumors in either direction.
Chad Richardson – Alias: Chad Richardson
Name: Chad Richardson.
Age: 18
Rank/title: Merchant’s son
Known Family/Relatives: His father, Geoffrey Richardson.
Ambitions/Goals: To take over his father’s position as head of trade.
Backstory/History: Chad was raised by his father in the city, and always lived a spoiled and carefree life. He never wanted for anything as a child. His mother was mistreated by Geoffrey often and he had many affairs. Chad never liked his mother and always favored his father. His mother, too, never liked Chad and always resented him because Geoffrey loved him more. Chad is educated but kind of a dolt at times – especially when it comes to the poor and the struggles of others in the world. He is ignorant and believes everything can be solved with money. Chad actively pursues Wyatt, though he is often rejected by her and does not have Daniel's favor though he desperately tries to win it whenever he can. He also pursues Mallory Abbot, attracted to her physical appearance and fond of being a thorn in her side. He's a very flirty man and despite his desires to settle down with a worthwhile wife, he seems to have problems finding a genuine woman to wed. He claims to one day take over his father's position, because he is just as good a socialite as his father is.
Merfolk
Todd Bennett – Alias: Todd
Name: Todd
Age: Unknown, appears anywhere from 18-24
Rank/title: Average merman of no royal background
Known Family/Relatives: Unknown.
Ambitions/Goals:
Backstory/History: Todd has lived as a merman for his whole life, under the leadership of Billie-Jean and her castle. He is used to pirates and has a special attraction to sailors who wear bright blue and have dark hair. He has met and spoken to pirates and Navy alike – though he tends to favor Navy men – and he has fallen in love with a few. However, when he tries to be with those who he falls in love with, they can never stay alive in the water like he can. Todd always feels awful when he winds up luring a sailor to his death, but he can’t help it. He’s very shy but also very charming and sweet, and often sailors who he seduces don’t realize he’s dangerous or even a merman until they try to follow him in the water. Todd typically wears coverings over his chest, which is quite different from most mermen and often convinces fishermen and sailors that he is a man who was cast overboard a ship that sailed through previously. Often, Todd will clothe himself in the clothing he takes from his victims because he is attracted to their style.
