"I get it. It makes sense, the guys' line of thinking," Chase said. When he realized how horrible that sounded -even if it was true that it was most guys' way of thinking - he tried to correct it. "Not that that makes it right. Cause it's not. I mean, would I think that? Maybe, but it's not like I'd ask for a lap dance or anything.... That came out wrong. That's not...I mean it's dumb...the lap dance part, not the actual dancing part...not that dancing's stupid cause it's not..." Crap, he was doing so well right up until he opened his big mouth! Why was everything suddenly coming out so wrong? What about all that awesome stuff they were just saying too each other? All that fun teasing they were doing? He was going to screw it up! "What I mean is...I'm not asking for...I don't expect anything..." Feeling his free hand start to clam up a little Chase quickly rubbed it against his pants leg before running his fingers through his curls. Yet instead of actually thinking about how to fix what he was saying Chase just blurted out the first thing to come out of his mouth. "I like hanging out with you and I like you And I'd like to see you dance but it doesn't have to be for me, it can be just to see you dance." Damn it, he hoped that sounded better somehow!
He was slightly relieved when he felt her squeeze his hand back, though he wasn't sure how long it was going to last after him opening his big mouth like that. But even with Chase as smooth as he could be sometimes, he felt as though he were having a hard time recovering from everything he just blabbed. "I am so not getting any kinda reward after that," he couldn't help but think out loud. He shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair again. He glanced at the kids, in particular the one who Max said was a sneak. Hey, at least she was playing along. "You know what, that's just what I was thinking. He looks like the kinda kid that's gonna be some sorta criminal mastermind. Kidnapping unsuspecting people or puppies, hacking into computer systems, robbing banks...yeah, he's got that written all over his face." Damn it why did that sound bad, too? "I didn't mean when he was older and in a creepy way, I meant right now...cause he's a...secretly a criminal mastermind...and he's plotting something.... Yeah, ok." He eventually gave up with his last statement. There was no saving that one. Just when he thought there was the smallest chance he'd be out of the woods, Chase let his big mouth take over and let whatever he said come out. God, why was he so worried about saying the wrong thing in front of this girl? Just because they were already making all these other plans and they liked being around each other and actually liked each other? Just because they seemed to be attracted to each other on so many levels? Just because this one date was somehow going so much better than every date combined that Chase was ever on before? Anything positive that Max had said about him or was thinking about him could be going out the window now and the thought of it all crashing down or just coming to a sudden end.... It didn't feel right to Chase. Somehow.
"In case you couldn't tell, you are probably the most unexpected thing to happen to me. I don't know if that's the wrong thing to say. But if I knew exactly what to expect from you or this date then I'd be trying to pull off to be a whole lot smoother and not be some nervous, bumbling..." What was a word his sister usually used on him...? Oh well, like it really mattered that much. They all meant pretty much the same thing. "...doofus. But I did mean what I said. About liking you. And that I think this," he briefly gestured between the two of them, "is a good thing." He paused and glanced at Max's hand. Just trust her? Like he really needed to think about that. Somehow. But he didn't. He started reaching out to hold her other hand only to pause again. His nerves got the better of him and he was still wary - or at least trying to be - about what was coming out of his mouth. She said she didn't mind. But did she still think that? Would she even want to? Chase didn't retract his hand; but he also didn't want to just take her hand if she suddenly changed her mind. "You sure you don't need that hand to slap me with?" Then again, maybe that wasn't the best thing to say either. He just hoped they'd be able to get to their second date where he could make up for all his blunders tonight. Even if it meant kicking her butt in PacMan.
