A few months of sheltered apartment life and Sylvan was slowly starting to go stir crazy. Sure, the lack of responsibility suited him - as did the odd jobs, but something was missing. It had him biting at his lack of fingernails for a whole week before he decided without a doubt what he needed to do. He had to scratch this itch. Dressed comfortably in dark clothing, Syl walked out of the apartment only to run straight in to Lillith. "Whoa watch it bro!" she said right away, eyeing him suspiciously from behind the bag of groceries she carried. "Where are you off to, all dressed up like Johnny Cash, huh? Gonna rob a bank or what?" Sylvan shrugged, moving aside to let her in and to escape any interrogation that would follow if he stayed any longer. "I'll be back later alright, don't wait up."
He started the stroll down the stairwell and made a quick decision to take the car before Lils had any say so otherwise. She really shouldn't have left the keys in the cup holder anyway, he always told her that it was a good way to get it stolen. Lils had set the groceries down and was about to turn and get the rest of them from the car when she heard the familiar rev of her engine. "Motherfucker!" she huffed, closing the apartment door behind her and sprinting down the stairs - the jingling of her chains motivating her to move faster as Syl began to back out of her spot. "You hold it buster!" she demanded through the cracked window, her pointer finger so sharp and direct at him that it could've lacerated him straight away. Stopping the car reluctantly, Sylvan groaned and opened the car door. "I'll be back faster if I take the car, just let me. I promise I won't ramp it off anything, c'mon sis." Lillith wasn't going to hear him out. She shook her head repetitively until he finished his begging. "I'm taking you wherever you think it's so fucking important to go, but first you're getting the groceries - taking them upstairs - and putting them away because you pissed me off." Sylvan wasn't in the mood for this. He had a goal damn it. "And if I don't?" he retorted, shifting only slightly in the driver's seat. Lils' eyes narrowed. "If you don't you can find another sucker to feed and house your loafing ass." Yeah, he figured as much.
It didn't take but ten minutes to put everything away and lock the apartment up, so his determination hadn't declined in the slightest. Plus it gave him the time to make up a good story to tell his sister about where he was off to and why. Lowering himself in to the passenger side of the car, he looked over to his unenthusiastic sibling. "Alright, look. I'm sorry. I didn't want to tell you right away but you know how you like art and shit? I was going to surprise you with a real fine, genuine piece of art from the Metric Academy Gallery. And legit, way legit." Lil glanced at her brother in her peripheral view. "Since when do you do anything thoughtful like that? I'm not buying." She wasn't going to move the car from its spot until he gave a good enough explanation, that much was obvious. "I feel like it owe you that much. You put up with me and my crap all the time now, you think I haven't thought about that? Give me some credit. Come on Lily, give me a chance." A moment of silence passed, Sylvan with a hopeful stare at Lils who eventually just reached for her keys and turned over the ignition. He wasn't sure how he was going to explain his running from the scene of the crime later on, but he figured he'd leave that to future him.
Lils was still wary of her brother's intentions. The way he sat so anxiously still was pretty unsettling but, as willing to give the benefit of the doubt as she generally was - she tried not to dissect his every tick. He was her brother after all, a complete goof and weirdo and unpredictable as shit when it came to things he wanted to do. They reached the Gallery and the lot was almost completely empty. "Looks closed." she observed, to which Sylvan replied, "Yeah the guy I talked to told me they were gonna be doing some restoration or some shit but I could still come by - use the side door. Just chill, it shouldn't take long." He opened the door and made his way to the side of the building, Lils calling after him: "It better be something totally awesome little one!"
Shaking off the suppression of having to keep a facade up during the ride over, Sylvan took a brief second to lean against the wall away from the view of his sister - just getting his bearings and amping himself up for a bit of petty larceny. He took a step back and observed the windows and doors. If he had any luck in this world, he'd be able to just walk right in and out, no problem. He tried the side door and it opened, triggering a loud beep. "Fuck." he said under his breath, moving swiftly behind a large sculpture just in case someone came around to check it out. Footsteps approached, then faded. Sylvan grinned like a madman, turning in his hiding spot to get a load of what was available in the five finger discount category. It would have to be something cool enough for Lil to appreciate, but nice enough for him to feel good about taking. This wasn't about wasting time and energy, this was a field test. One piece stood out as the perfect prize, a sketch work of a country road in a decorative black frame. It would fit the black and white motif in their bathroom like a glove. Checking to see if the coast was clear from the direction of the footsteps, Syl crossed the gallery space and stood in front of it. What he'd missed from far away really jumped out at him now and he lingered for a few seconds as he looked it over in mental appraisal. Yep this was the one. He lifted off the wall, only to find it more secure than he first considered. He hissed under his breath, having to use a fair amount of force to pull it away from the brackets that held it so firm. The force had its effect as a consequence, sending Sylvan backwards in to a pillar holding a glass encasement with a vase inside. His weight not exactly formidable, it didn't do much damage aside from making the vase within the glass tip over - still secured in the encasement and maybe slightly chipped if anything. Yeah, now was the time to get the hell out of here. Sylvan made his way back toward the door he entered through, not taking the precaution he had prior and instead starting a run at the door with the piece of art under his arm.
