There really wasn’t anything like a scavenger hunt to fill the empty void of having absolutely nothing to do.
Todd was keeping it simple today – wearing a white and navy sweater with lines from the torso down. He reached a hand up and scratched the back of his neck, the wind blowing through the crowd outside of the forest. It was a cute little activity Metric Academy (Or, more specifically, Susan) was putting on in the spirit of Halloween. It wasn’t quite then yet – it was only October 20th today – but everyone was talking about the holiday already. Spooky décor lined the perimeter of the woods.
Todd focused on a particularly shiny stream that was being tossed around helplessly by the wind, its tail melding in with the clouds overhead. It was 4 in the afternoon, and soon the sun would set. It was a nighttime activity.
”Next, next!” Susan ushered the line Todd was in forward. There were two lines, and people were being partnered up randomly. It was supposed to be a fun way for people to get to know one another. Todd, wanting to emerge from his shy bubble just a little bit, had volunteered to come here on his own. He didn’t have Amy or Chad dragging him. Thank god.
Susan offered Todd a number on a piece of paper that glowed in the dark. His paper was orange, and had 11 on it. He looked around and saw a pattern – all the numbers between 10 and 15 were orange. 5-10 were green, and it looked like 1-9 were red.
Todd looked around for his partner as a bunch of people met their partners. They then grabbed the sheets from Susan depicting what they were looking for and wandered off into the woods. Todd hoped that his partner was nice…
He saw it! An 11, shining brightly on a piece of orange paper. He headed over and tapped the person on the shoulder.
”Hi! U—uhm, you—M—Mason?” Todd blinked, wide eyed, as he saw his friends’ boyfriend. It was odd to see him without Amy. Todd wondered if she was here somewhere, too. ”I… it looks like we’re partnered up… hope that’s okay…”{{ x }}
”What would your mother say if she saw that shirt?” Susan asked Cliff, who took the green piece of paper from his mother’s best friend. Cliff didn’t particularly care what his mother thought of it, but knew it would just be a pain in the ass if Susan gossiped with her about it later. Cliff reached down and zipped up his hoodie, giving the teacher the best quizzical expression he could.
”What? It’s just a witty saying.” He said. Susan quirked a brow. Cliff didn’t back down.
”I saw what that shirt said, Cliff.” Susan didn't back down. Cliff saw, with annoyance, why she got along so well with his mother.
”It just says I'm polite. It’s sarcastic. Sorry, I’ll throw it away later.” Cliff said, reading the number on his slip. 7. He said thanks to Susan but didn’t listen to her continue to try to talk about his mother and ‘father’ (she said father – he corrected her in his mind). Instead, he tracked down the boy with a number matching his. He tapped Thomas on the shoulder.
”Hey. We’re partners.” Cliff said. He didn’t look too enthusiastic. He wasn’t… he was only coming to this thing to get out of another family dinner. Susan could attest that he was here, therefore, it was the perfect alibi. However there was a prize at the end of this – a 25 dollar gift card to the local store for both the members of the winning team. He grinned, hoping he wasn’t stuck with a buzz kill. ”We can win this twenty five easy. I’m pretty good at finding stuff.”
