The annual homecoming dance at Metric Academy had been in the weeks ever since the school year had started, and now on a Friday night in early October, the event would be starting in less than an hour! The weather outside was clear, thankfully. Throughout the day there hadn’t been a dark cloud in the sky and the wind was cool. There had been classes that afternoon, but the High School students were given a half-day and got out at 12, while for college students any classes that started after or at 12:30 were canceled for the day. This was a tradition at Metric, and gave students going plenty of time to get ready for the dance at 7 PM that night.
Despite the night weather, however, most students opted to drive to the dance center and park in the massive parking lot behind the building. It was simply a tradition to take a car—besides that, the grounds were vast and walking there could be a pain in high heels, which the majority of the female population liked to wear to these events. It was less than an hour until the event itself started and people were starting to arrive, but the majority of people inside right now were chaperones and the occasional early birds.
There were quite a few chaperones invited to attend the homecoming dance, or any dance the school held. The more supervision they had, the less chance it was that something wrong would happen, the faculty assumed. Chaperones came from both the college and high schools, and they were encouraged to have just as much fun as the students, and allowed to dance and take dates (within reason of course). As long as they didn’t set a bad example, they would certainly be allowed to volunteer for upcoming dances as well.
The event itself had already been set up. Right now, there was a very long table at the end of the dance studio floor. The table had several trays of small finger pastries on it, as well as jugs of punch evenly spaced out along the border for people to drink. There were also tall jugs of water near the punch, as an alternative for those who didn’t want the fruity flavor or to risk staining their dresses with anything not clear.
The rest of the floor was vast and decorated to fit a fall theme, since that was the current season. The tablecloths were all black with little glass centerpieces that contained fake leaves that spilt out onto the rest of the table. Streamers that were designed kind of like strings of pearls, except with orange, brown, and red leaves lined the pillars behind the tables. The entranceway to the section of the dance studio being used for the dance was decorated with these streamers as well, which were wrapped up to either side like they were curtains, held open by a string that tied the different strands together. The main doorway to the studio, which actually had doors and not just an arch, was lit up with colorful lights and had a carpet laid down for the students to walk down and approach the dance floor in.
Inside of the room picked for homecoming there was a large stage, which had a podium set in place and a nicely decorated table in the center. There were four crowns on the stage—an extravagant one for whoever won Queen, a fancy one for whoever won King, a tiara-esque crown for the winner of princess, and a simpler golden crown for the winner of prince. The headmaster of the academy was somewhere up there, shuffling papers. He’d be the one announcing the royalty.
Near the tables set up for the attendees of the dance to rest were booths labeled Homecoming Royalty in bright, orange and red lights. The elections would be done entirely anonymously, and no one would know who had won until the end of the night, when it was announced. A few of the chaperones were currently milling about, making sure the decorations and food were in order. Some were making small talk with the early bird students.
One of the chaperones already in attendance was Susan Summers. She was wearing a short dress that ended just at her knees. The skirt was solid white, and the bodice was a sky blue color. The white skirt had a few bits of light blue mixed in, almost as though the floral pattern of the bodice was “dripping” down into it. Around her waist was a blue, nicely tied sash. Susan wore a light blue mineral necklace that had been a gift from her late mother when she was a teenager. She always wore this necklace to special events like this. On her feet were a pair of silver shoes with a sliver of a heel. Call her traditional, but she didn’t want to be taller than her ‘date’, who was only a few inches taller than her as it was! Of course, if she said that to her brother he’d get angry, but he didn’t have to know her reasons for wearing such a small heel!
Susan was currently walking around the floor, making sure everything was set up well. The ‘DJ’ of the night was actually one of the teacher’s using their Bluetooth device to control what was playing on the speaker. In the background currently, a cheesy pop song was playing rather lowly. Susan hummed along with a bounce in her step as she stopped by the food table, making sure nothing was out of line. Of course the chaperones were expected, throughout the night, to make sure that nothing got terribly gross or messed up on these tables. They had janitors, but with a big school like Metric, the janitors would certainly need direction for where to clean.
Susan turned around to face one of her coworkers and started a conversation with her, as she said she wasn’t looking forward to breaking up the dancing couples that got a little too up close and personal. Susan laughed, saying kids would be kids, which resulted in her coworker reminding her this was a school function. Though Susan always joked about allowing people to get ‘frisky’ at these events, so to speak, she knew where the line was and in truth was only joking.
She knew about two of the early birds here—Daphne La’Rochefoucault and Kara Cullen. Daphne was in attendance in a nude and black colored dress, one that was surprising to see her in! In Susan’s brief period of knowing Daphne she was very conservative. In fact, upon first seeing the dress, Susan had to do a double take to make sure it wasn’t against dress code!
But it was perfectly fine. Given Daphne’s extremely large height, the dress filled out on her quite nicely. The nude colored belt around her waist blended in so well with Daphne’s skin tone that it at first seemed like the pieces of her dress weren’t connected—but they in fact were. It was a very classy look, much different than Susan anticipated her students wearing for homecoming!
Daphne was there early because she had nothing better to do in the time period until the dance started. She heard the music playing faintly and was tapping her foot along to the beat, having spent most of the afternoon dressing herself up. She sat straight, her hair falling in straight cascades to her elbows. She supposed she should have come with a date. Or with friends.
But here in America, Daphne had neither. All of the American boys she’d met so far were slobs and left the door open. Daphne mace a “tch” sound, thinking of her housemates, those twin boys who almost always forgot to shut and lock the door when they left. Poor Josue had almost gotten lost outside three times this year. Daphne was getting quite annoyed with it. Daphne was very difficult to get along with at times, and thus didn’t have many friends except for a few people she frequently saw at the library, her coworkers there, and a few people from her dance lessons though she considered almost all of the rivals.
A few tables away from her sat Kara, chewing gum, as usual. Today the gum was flavored like peaches. Kara wore a short red dress with black trim, which lifted up the side of her right thigh. She was resting her pudgy elbows on the table and had her chin in her palm, annoyed at the music choice. She had only come due to her mother insisting that homecoming was a special event, and this she was wearing things she’d found in her closet. The dress was the closest thing to homecoming garb Kara owned. On her feet were a pair of thick, five inch boots that she hoped made it very clear to the disgusting, lecherous men going stag that she had zero intention of dancing with their sorry dateless asses.
Kara made brief eye contact with Daphne before she looked away, not knowing her well enough (or liking her well enough, really. Daphne was drop dead gorgeous sure, but completely stoic and boring) to really converse with.
Kara glanced at her phone and clacked away at the keyboard, sending a text to her mother. She started to blow a bubble with her gum when she spotted someone she didn’t like at all—Arthur—walking over towards his sister and going through the row of tables Kara was sitting at. As Arthur reached her table she glared at him, making eye contact, and then rolled her eyes. Arthur stared at her for a second, wondering what the fuck her issue was, before he scoffed and continued on his way until he came to a stop by his sister.
He wasn’t wearing anything super fancy to homecoming. Sure, for the family formal coming up in a few months he’d get a suit to wear (purely for show—he had no family that came to the event, but Susan liked to dress up for it regardless) but this was merely a homecoming dance. So he was wearing a white button down shirt, black slacks, a blue tie, and had buttoned a cardigan over it to be a makeshift jacket. It was comfortable, easy to walk in, and Arthur was pretty sure he wasn’t here to impress anyone, anyway. Besides, it looked decent given the setting.
”What’s the time, Artie?” Susan asked, and Arthur pulled his phone out of his pocket and tapped the home button.
”6:30.” He said, and Susan smiled in appreciation. She muttered out a ‘perfect’ before she dragged her brother by the arm towards one of the tables, to wait for her coworkers to come. She was super excited Natalie and John were coming—Addy and Annabelle would be safe with Monika, who didn’t feel up to going to the dance this evening. Susan sat down and eagerly eyed the door, waiting for Natalie and John to walk in. Arthur noted Susan’s enthusiasm with a shake of his head as he opened up that stupid little inside out game on his phone that he’d been addicted to lately and started to play.-x-
Amy O’Neal stood in her bedroom with the door shut, finishing up the last touches on her dress. It was a really cute design, one that she’d saw on a mannequin and immediately decided that this was the dress she needed. It was short in the front but fell down at odd, differing heights all around her waist and longest in the back. She had applied makeup carefully, and taken the time to straighten her hair and style it to the side. Amy was super excited to be going to the dance with her boyfriend!
She hummed to herself as she fastened the clasp on her shoes. She was also pretty excited that she’d get to see—and hopefully drive—down to the dance studio with Ace, Max, Todd and Niko as well! Amy didn’t know Niko all that well but ever since Todd told her that he was taking her, she’d been trying to break the ice around them a little bit! After all, Niko was really nice, and a model like Todd! Which meant they were gorgeous, and would probably look gorgeous together!
Oooh… Amy wanted to take a picture…
Amy heard a knock on the door and beamed.
”I think that’s our guys!” She yelled—though not meaning it for Chardonnay because that girl could walk for all Amy cared! Amy had volunteered to drive the group to the dance center but had no intention of offering for Chardonnay. Well, she supposed, Chardonnay would be getting a ride from Chad. Amy opened her door and stepped out, heels clicking on the floor of the suite. ”We’re coming!”-x-
”It’s a pretty good coincidence we’re going to the same dorm, huh?” Chad Richardson said, making sure that his vest looked decent on him. He actually had a full-fledged suit for homecoming prepared. After all, if he was accompanying Chardonnay and didn’t look fully presentable, she’d probably kill him, and that wasn’t even a joke! He and Todd were both in one of the bathrooms of their suite, staring into the mirror. While Chad was wearing a beige tie and white button down with his vest, Todd was wearing all black with one burst of color—a bright pink tie to coordinate with Niko’s dress. When he’d first been told the color of the dress Todd had momentarily panicked, but when he actually put on the button down and tie he didn’t think it looked that bad. In fact, the dark black of his outfit and the pink of the tie actually looked pretty cool…
Todd glanced over at Chad, who was fixing his hair with a hum. While Chad seemed excited to be going to the same suite Todd was not. The last time that Todd had taken Chad somewhere, it resulted in Mal getting annoyed. Granted he didn’t know if Niko would get annoyed with Chad… she didn’t seem the type to get annoyed. Then again, Chad had a very specific way of getting under people’s skins. He was kind of hoping that Chad just focused all his efforts on his own date and then just left everyone else alone. At least Amy would be there, too… Amy was pretty good about mellowing Chad out.
The two boys had given Ace the second bathroom in the suite. Since Arthur was already gone, they didn’t need to worry about him—not that Todd was even sure he was going. When they went to leave, Todd called out to him.
”Ace! We’re, uh, we’re heading to the girls’ suite. If you’re not done, I mean, we’ll wait for you when we’re there.” Todd assured, then followed Chad.
Chad left, still whistling, leaving the boys’ suite without the jacket of his suit. Why bother, right? He led the way towards the female suite they were both heading to, and when they arrived, Chad immediately knocked on the door, clearing his throat after he heard Amy’s voice ring out.
”Hey, guys! We’re here! Amy, your boyfriend’s not here yet!” Chad yelled loudly, and Todd blinked over at Chad with wide eyes.
”Why announce that—he’s probably on the way!” Todd said.
”Well obviously so that Amy stays out of our way! We’ve got actual dates to appreciate here, Todd. I can’t wait to see whatever dress Chardonnay’s got on. It’s probably really hot.” Chad said, and Todd made a face at Chad, his cheeks peppering pink. Even though Chardonnay didn’t consider this a ‘date’ and Chad certainly didn’t consider it a ‘date’ in the traditional sense either, that didn’t mean he couldn’t be proud of Chardonnay actually agreeing to arrive to homecoming on his arm! She was really gorgeous, albeit a bitch. But when it came to going to a dance… who really cared if your partner was a bitch? Didn’t matter, as long as they looked gorgeous.
Todd sighed and adjusted his tie a little bit, somewhat nervous. Though he had asked Niko to the dance as friends and that was what they were going as, he was still nervous that maybe he looked weird, or not good enough. Niko wasn’t the type to get mad, but he was worried that if she wasn’t satisfied she’d just sigh in disappointment and that was even worse than being yelled at. He shifted a little, waiting for either the door to open, Ace to show up, or Mason to show up.-x-
Shyanne had her whole house to herself! She had no idea where that follower of hers, Jessia, had gone or where that weird guy they had traded for those perverts was, but that didn’t matter when Shyanne had the best way to get ready for homecoming physically possible!
Shyanne had her iPod playing mood music as she curled her hair, already in her dress and makeup. Her dress was short, pink, and cute! Shyanne had actually picked the dress after she picked her heels, which elevated her another five inches and made her feel super, super pretty and gorgeous! Sure, the reminder that her date wasn’t exactly tall made her cringe, but oh well. This would make her stand out as gorgeous, and then Noah as just kind of, there! It was literally the most idea way this dance could go, at this point.
Shyanne fluffed out her curls, winking at herself in the mirror to check her eye makeup. She made sure the bodice of her top was flat and nice.
There was one thing she wanted out of this night: the title of Homecoming princess! She was too young for Queen, but oh, she wanted Princess so bad. The last two years, she hadn’t won. But then she was just an underling, and the two girls she latched onto like a leech had won. But this year the two of them had left, and now it was all Shyanne. It was practically in her grasp! And by taking this weirdo loser… well, maybe she’d get votes from people who thought she was nice! Hell, Shyanne knew she was gorgeous enough to win, she was meant to win and everyone knew her! She had this in the bag, even with Noah as a date.
Shyanne glanced at her phone when she was done getting ready, and sighed. She had to tell him which house she was in. She opened up his contact info, which she’d saved as ‘loser’, and typed.
I’m in house 5. If you don’t have a car, I’ll just drive us Shyanne sent, and then she slowly descended the stairs of her house, feeling like a princess already, as she decided to wait downstairs for her loser date to show up.-x-
Cliff was already at the library, sitting on the steps with his eyes glued to his watch.
He was nervous. Well, that was an understatement. He was extremely, palms shaking, back of neck sticking, I’m-going-to-get-stood-up nervous. He told Noah that he had a date—though he hadn’t mentioned it to his mother or John. He didn’t give Noah any details, wanting it to instead be a surprise for when they showed up together. But the more he sat here on the library steps, the more he started to wonder just how much interest Pippa actually had, here. He met her in the woods… and they talked and exchanged numbers… and she was really cute and funny and he had just made an awkward mess of himself. Though he had impressed her with arrows… but she could have been acting impressed. She could have just decided not to go to homecoming and would leave Cliff here, alone, staring at his phone as though waiting for a text from her.
He stared over at the dance center. The attendees were already lining up at the door, beginning to head in, and make themselves comfortable. Cliff nervously tugged on the collar of his shirt. At least he wasn’t in a suit. If he did get stood up, he could just walk to his house and pretend that none of this ever happened.
He sighed and brought his hand up to the back of his neck, mindlessly clicking his phone to look like he was doing something other than sit on the steps of the library like a weirdo.
