Cliff stared, unimpressed, at his cafeteria food. For a prestigious, fancy academy even Metric had shitty lunch options sometimes. Today he hadn’t felt like bringing a lunch, so here he sat with his best friend Noah beside him at a crowded table, poking his food as though it was going to bite him.
Overall the food wasn’t bad, for a school lunch. It consisted of a cheeseburger with fries and a mysterious yellow goop that Cliff was pretty sure was supposed to be cream corn, or it had been at one point, but then the cooks cave up and just served it as some kind of weird soup thing. Cliff was currently poking that as he listened to the people around him talk about stupid things, but the most recurring topic of conversation was the upcoming homecoming dance.
Given that it was late September already, the first big event of the semester was the dance. Most people were busy securing dates, complaining about a lack of dates, ect. By now, Cliff knew exactly who was going with who to the dance and who, of the popular crowd, didn’t have a date. Cliff didn’t really care. He’d never held much of an interest in the dance. His best friend, Noah, was more interested in asking girls than Cliff was. Yet somehow every year, the two of them seemed to go stag… Cliff never commented on that when Noah bragged about the girls he talked to.
”Did they miss the memo to serve a veggie with lunch, or did they opt for a soup instead?” Cliff grumbled, using the plastic spoon his lunch tray came with to scoop up the goopy liquid. ”It’s a bit of a corny lunch… if you ask me.”
Cliff took a bite of his burger, looking at the other trays surrounding them. The minutes ticked on, and Cliff was bored. But while staring at a particularly unappetizing serving of what appeared to be meatloaf, Cliff got a brilliant idea.
”Noah!” He yelled out, getting the attention of everyone else at the table, too. ”I bet you couldn’t eat this goob. Wait, no—I bet you can’t eat everyone’s grossest food! I bet you a dare.”
Cliff grinned at his friend, knowing that the both of them found it hard to resist bets for dares. If Cliff lost and Noah could finish all of the disgusting food, then Noah got to dare Cliff to do anything he wanted without objection—and if Noah couldn’t finish the bet, then Cliff got to give his friend a dare. Cliff rose his brows over at his friend.
”Up for a challenge?”
