Susan bit her lower lip as she stared down at her phone, which was positioned in her lap. Her long black hair was pulled back into a very messy bun and she was already clothed in her pajamas. Her eyes were focused on the coffee table in her apartment, on top of which sat a zip locked pregnancy test that read positive.
There was someone else in her apartment—her younger brother, Arthur. Of course he had been the first one she told. She’d called him over after she confirmed the test and saw her doctor. She didn’t want to tell him without knowing for certain she was pregnant. She knew how Arthur got, and she hadn’t been wrong.
He had been angry. Hell, she’d never seen him so angry. Even though he wasn’t angry at her, it was scary. It was probably a good thing Kasper was abroad, because if he had been here he’d probably be dead. After the shock wore down Arthur had realized how much worse he was making this for his sister and retreated to the bathroom to calm down, leaving Susan in the living room with her heart pounding in her chest and an uncomfortable squirming in her stomach.
Kasper had broken it off with her ‘until further notice’… he had to go abroad. Susan had been expecting the relationship to be completely over after that. She’d been preparing to move on with her life.
And then she missed her period. Twice. She was fucking pregnant. She wanted kids. But Kasper had already left. He had a life to get to, and she wasn’t supposed to be a part of it anymore.
She sighed shakily, leaning her elbows on her knees as she slipped her cell phone between her hands. She heard the door open and Arthur’s footsteps approach, stopping at the edge of the coffee table.
The silence that followed was painful. Excruciatingly painful. Susan couldn’t bring herself to speak and Arthur didn’t even know what to say. Until, finally, Arthur walked around the coffee table and sat down beside Susan.
“You’re calling him.”
“I can’t. Maybe it’s better if I don’t. He has a life. He has more important things to worry about. I can just--”
“Bullshit, Susan! Nothing is more important than you are!” Arthur snapped, staring over at her even though she didn’t look up. She bit her lower lip to try to stop it from trembling, to stop the tears from flowing. “He did this to you!”
Susan slowly shook her head.
“No… we both did this. I just can’t… I’m not that girl who gets pregnant just to keep her man! If I call him up I’ll sound just like that, I’ll sound so desperate and tearful and, and—“ She hiccupped, unable to stop the tears, her petit figure trembling in fear, “What if he doesn’t understand that’s not what I mean, what if he yells at me—“
“Then I’LL yell at him! If you can’t get through to him I fucking will. There is no way you aren’t confronting him about this! He can’t just NOT know, Susan! If you don’t call him, I will.” Arthur said firmly.
Susan hiccupped again, forcing herself to straighten up. She wiped at her eyes with the sleeve of her pajamas, and slowly hit dial on Kasper’s number. She couldn’t stop trembling and was trying to compose herself so that she didn’t sound like a wreck.
She felt a warmth on her other hand and turned her head to look at Arthur, who had squeezed her hand in comfort. She smiled at him, and he tried to force a smile back. He was too angry to do it convincingly, but Susan fund the effort adorable anyway. She knew Kasper was reasonable… he’d handle this well.
“Hello? Kasper? It’s Susan. I have to tell you, I... I’m pregnant. And it’s yours.” She blurted out, her hand clutching her brothers tightly. Oh no, that was too sudden, she should have waited! She waited for a response from the other end of the line, her heart accelerating and her breathing growing irregular, a warmth threatening behind her eyes.
