He likes to keep a clean face but when he's feeling particularly masculine (or lazy) he will let his stubble grow out for a few days and trim it accordingly. It paid decently, and with the help of this as well as the money set aside for his schooling by his father, Marty was welcomed to attend a well regarded institute by the age of 14.
He was very distraught to leave the town he'd grown up in, but it was a chance to learn more about the world beyond New Alresford and the river it shared - so he did not put up much of a fuss when he boarded the train and left to get a higher education. No matter what he learned though, could persuade him from practicing his already sharp skill at the building and maintenance of furniture and structures in general. He convinced the old headmaster there to let him work on the needed repairs in that area, to which the skeptical man in the eve of his retirement eventually agreed to. He was so impressed by the boy's work ethic enough that he enlisted him with plenty of work afterwards, paying him generously. Along with his classwork and carpentry, Marty didn't have much time for sports or horseplay like the other boys which made him in to a black sheep of sorts. He used his free time exercising and jogging about the grounds, already strong enough to fight back any teasing they had to dish out to him.

He took much more interest in the boy, who was indeed much more capable and growing more handsome with each year than he'd ever been in his youth. The man took it upon himself to write to Marty's mother, who was overjoyed to hear that her son would be employed to the man personally once he graduated from the institute. She'd already been so proud of her child as he would send her generous amounts of money every month, so she did not question the man's motives at all. Neither did Marty for that matter.

Marty learned early on how to restore antiques thanks to all the home attendants who were grateful to have someone else to take the job and responsibility if things weren't done the 'right' way. Luckily for Marty though, Maynard Hollsman had a soft spot for him and wouldn't punish him even if he had ruined any of the priceless objects he repaired. He didn't take advantage of this kindness, however, Marty just continued to do his very best around the place - picking up all sorts of new skills from each member of the help there. He soon had the title of plumber, electrician, mechanic, landscaper, and roofer under his belt.
That Winter, instead of going home Marty opted to stay at the Manor after hearing about the damage the place would always get during the blistery season. This was when he met Beatrice Hollsman, Maynard's seventeen year old granddaughter. It was the first time he'd been acquainted with such a pretty girl since he had left New Alresford and it was the first time she'd met such a charming and staggeringly handsome young man. They began a whirlwind romance almost right away. Beatrice would hang around and watch him at work, always trying to distract him in a number of ways during her stay. Though he didn't allow her to disrupt her work, Marty did disrupt her studies all too easily. She left for another year of a prestigious ladies academy by the end of the break - only to be kicked out and sent back after a number of months with the news that she was undoubtedly pregnant.
Things began to go downhill from there. Marty, barely 19 and was now about to be a father. The whole Hollsman family apart from Maynard was absolutely devastated by Marty's lack of breeding and social graces. They decided it was best that he not be in his baby daughter's life and that he need never see Beatrice again. He wanted to escape from all of it but he couldn't. He was trapped and the only person he could trust now was Maynard. The elder man used the boy's new found vulnerabilities to display the affection he'd been hiding so long for him, in small ways at first, but it was soon that Marty clued in. He really didn't know where to turn now. The manor was so remote that it wasn't like he could just run off. He tolerated the attention, little by little becoming accustomed to the lingering looks and brushes against him until he grew to expect them. It was shameful, but Marty planned on biding his time until the right moment came to leave.

He couldn't believe she hadn't told him in her occasional calls and letters - but he was so relieved to have a way out. He was all packed and ready but it took so long for his sleep to come, feeling deep inside of him that something wicked was to come during the night. He wasn't wrong in the slightest. Before daybreak Marty woke to find the man in his bed, breathing hard, with his hand in his boxers. He froze in shock. Instead of fighting what was happening he forced his eyes closed, letting the man who had provided for him for so long to have his way. He imagined the hand as someone else, convincing his mind to imagine Beatrice and to enjoy the weak grappling under the covers - enough to please Maynard with his hardening. All the older man wanted was this, Marty's virility there in the palm of his hand. Now that he had it he was ready to let go of the lusty thoughts that had plagued his mind for so long. Marty felt so dirty and used the moment he climaxed, as the man whispered how good of a job he'd done and snaked out of the room as quietly as he'd entered.

He swallowed his pride and shook the very same hand that had molested him, averting his eyes and not meeting the man's gaze until he felt an envelope in his grasp. Marty could only guess what it contained and there was no way he could say no to it. He had a savings, but most of his earnings had gone to his mother. He thanked Maynard through his teeth, for everything and left - not once looking back.
He arrived back to his hometown in time to say goodbye to his mother and see how happy he'd made her even though he hadn't been there to help her through her sickness. Marty cried hard at her deathbed while his aged father could only stare stoically at his son, ashamed that he hadn't become man enough to hide his emotions away like he'd learned in the military. Her funeral was full of silence and well wishes from strangers, it was something Marty decided to never forget, the sadness of the event something that could rival the traumatic moment back at the Manor. Daniel asked his son if he wanted to join him and move to the States where his next big client lived in Los Angeles. At first Marty wasn't sure. He never respected his father and he'd considered just staying in New Alresford for the rest of his days but after a long thought Marty accepted. It meant that his past wouldn't ever catch back up to him, or if it did it would be discouraged to cross an entire ocean to find him.

It was pretty miraculous that the high school was in need of such a teacher, so Marty saw this as a very promising sign that he was on the right track.
